Pompeii to Limit Visitors to 20,000 a Day to Protect the Site

Rome, November 8, 2024 — The famous Pompeii archaeological park in Italy will start limiting the number of visitors to 20,000 per day, starting November 15. This decision comes after the site saw over 36,000 visitors on a recent Sunday with free admission.

The park’s director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, said the new limit is important for the protection and safety of the ancient ruins. With so many people visiting each day, the site faces increased wear and tear, which could damage the historic remains.

By capping the number of daily visitors, the park hopes to preserve Pompeii for future generations while still allowing people to experience its history.
