Australia Proposes Social Media Ban for Kids Under 16

Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has suggested banning children under 16 from using social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok. He believes these platforms are harming young people, and that technology companies should enforce age limits. If companies fail to do so, they could face big fines.

The proposed rule is part of Australia’s efforts to make social media safer for kids, and it could become one of the strictest laws on this issue worldwide.

Albanese said the new law is aimed at protecting children, and he wants time to put this plan into action. He added that social media platforms, not parents or kids, will be responsible for following the rules.

Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, has said it will follow the new age limits but warned that Australia should carefully consider how these rules will be applied, to make sure they actually protect kids and meet parents’ concerns.
