Spanish Police Seize Record 13 Tons of Cocaine in Algeciras Port

ALGECIRAS, Spain, Nov 6 – Spanish police have seized a record 13 tons of cocaine hidden in a shipment of bananas at the port of Algeciras. The discovery, made on October 14, is the largest cocaine bust ever in Spain, surpassing last year’s 9.4-ton seizure at the same port.

Antonio Jesus Martinez, head of Spain’s National Police Narcotics Brigade, said the drugs were likely not just for the Spanish market. “The Spanish market cannot handle so many drugs at once. This was meant to be distributed across Europe,” he explained.

The cocaine was found in a container that had arrived from Ecuador. Authorities are continuing to investigate the trafficking operation behind the massive haul.
