Eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki Claims Six Lives in Indonesia
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in eastern Indonesia has erupted several times overnight, resulting in at least six confirmed deaths. In light of the eruptions, officials have raised the alert level to the highest tier of their four-tiered warning system.
The volcano, situated on the popular tourist island of Flores, released significant amounts of ash and lava, creating fireballs that impacted the surrounding areas. Authorities have evacuated several villages to ensure the safety of residents.
Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the country’s disaster management agency, confirmed the fatalities during an interview with Kompas TV. Footage received by AFP shows villages near the volcano blanketed in thick ash, with some areas experiencing active fires.
Emergency services are currently assessing the situation and providing assistance to affected communities as the risk of further eruptions remains a concern.
