NEPRA Reveals Spike in Consumer Complaints Against Power Companies, Fines LESCO Rs10 Million for Safety Violations
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) recently shared a significant increase in consumer complaints against power distribution companies (DISCOs) in Pakistan for the first three months of the current fiscal year, with a total of 12,938 grievances filed. Major power distributors like LESCO, FESCO, and MEPCO had the highest number of complaints, with 3,588, 2,302, and 2,177, respectively. K-Electric received 1,268 complaints during this period.
NEPRA also imposed a Rs10 million fine on Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) due to its failure to meet safety requirements, specifically for not completing the earthing of steel poles—a critical safety measure to prevent electrocution. This fine follows prior fines imposed on other companies, including K-Electric, FESCO, and GEPCO, for similar safety lapses.
In another instance, K-Electric was fined Rs10 million for electrocution incidents in Karachi from 2022 to 2023, which tragically resulted in the deaths of 33 people. NEPRA’s continued efforts underline its focus on holding power distribution companies accountable for both consumer complaints and safety compliance.
