Calls for Meaningful Conversations on Slavery and Climate Change

Commonwealth leaders wrapped up a summit in Samoa, calling for discussions on reparations for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade. They emphasized the need for honest conversations about slavery and its lasting effects on racial inequality.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the talks were not primarily about financial compensation. Instead, leaders agreed that it was time to engage in meaningful dialogue on the issue.

The summit also focused on climate change, leading to the adoption of the Commonwealth’s first Oceans Declaration. This declaration ensures that small island nations can keep their maritime boundaries even if rising sea levels submerge their land.

The discussions highlight a growing push for reparations and a commitment to addressing the severe impacts of climate change on vulnerable nations.
