62 Arrested, 5 Injured After Antisemitic Attacks on Israeli Fans in Amsterdam

Amsterdam, Nov 8, 2024 (AP) — Amsterdam police said Friday that five people were hospitalized and 62 others were arrested after violent attacks on Israeli soccer fans following a Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv. The violence, which police described as antisemitic, targeted Israeli supporters across the city.

The clashes took place late Thursday night, with attackers reportedly seeking out Israeli fans to assault. Despite a heavy police presence, several supporters were injured, and police had to escort some fans to safety.

Dutch and Israeli leaders strongly condemned the attacks. Israel’s Foreign Minister traveled to the Netherlands in response, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for swift action against those responsible.

Amsterdam’s authorities said the violence was “unacceptable” and pledged to increase security in the city, especially at Jewish sites. They also confirmed that the attacks occurred despite a ban on a pro-Palestinian protest near the soccer stadium.

Israel had initially arranged for planes to bring its citizens home, but later said they would find other ways to help those affected return. The violence has raised concerns about the safety of Israeli teams in Europe amid rising tensions related to the Middle East.
