23 Arrested in Manipur After Violent Protests and Property Damage
GUWAHATI, Nov 17– Police in India’s northeastern state of Manipur arrested 23 people on Sunday following violent protests that saw the homes of lawmakers and ministers ransacked and set on fire. The protests were sparked by anger over recent violent killings, with hundreds of demonstrators defying a curfew to voice their grievances.
The unrest, which has continued for two days, has created a tense standoff in Imphal, the state capital. A senior police official told Reuters that while the situation was relatively calm on Sunday, it remained unpredictable, and authorities were closely monitoring developments.
The violence underscores the growing tensions in Manipur, which has faced escalating ethnic and political unrest in recent months.
