1,500 Killed in Bangladesh Protests as Hasina Ousted

DHAKA — Interim leader Muhammad Yunus said on Sunday that approximately 1,500 people were killed in protests that led to the ousting of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina earlier this year. Yunus also claimed that as many as 3,500 people may have been forcibly abducted during Hasina’s 15-year rule.

The violence, which escalated in recent months, is part of a broader political crisis in Bangladesh. Hasina, who had been in power since 2009, faced growing opposition and unrest, particularly from groups calling for her resignation and accusing her government of human rights abuses and suppressing dissent.

The protests culminated in her removal, and the country is now under an interim government led by Yunus, who vowed to address the ongoing unrest and restore order. However, the political situation remains volatile, with many questioning the future stability of Bangladesh.
