2023 Safest Year for Air Travel in Five Years, ICAO Report Reveals

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has released its five-year safety report, covering air accidents and incidents from 2019 to 2023. The report highlights a significant decrease in fatal accidents, with 2023 recording the lowest number of fatalities in the past five years.

According to the report, only one fatal accident occurred in 2023, resulting in 72 deaths. This marks a substantial improvement in air safety, with the number of fatal accidents and associated fatalities decreasing significantly.

The report also notes a steady increase in passenger traffic, with 4.2 billion passengers transported worldwide in 2023, up from 3.2 billion in 2022. This represents a 30% increase from the previous year, although still slightly below pre-pandemic levels.

The number of flight departures for scheduled commercial operations also increased by 13% in 2023, with over 35 million departures recorded.
